The Akoya Pearl Special Design Ring is created by the oyster Pinctada fucata martensii. It is the smallest member of the saltwater oyster family. Akoya pearls, also known as "Japanese pearls," are cultivated in the Ehime, Mie, Oita, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto prefectures.
The ocean where Akoya oysters grow has a very low water temperature and constantly fluctuates with the seasons. The aragonite crystals that form during these seasonal changes compress, increasing their brilliance and color potential. As Akoya oysters age longer, the calcium carbonate CaCO3 (with mother-of-pearl) grows more, developing the pearl and creating precious pearls. Akoya Pearl Special Design Ring
However, longer periods also mean greater risks, as they are more susceptible to climatic conditions and disease. Therefore, they must be well protected throughout their cultivation. High-quality Akoya pearls must remain on Japanese shores for 1.5 to 2 years. During this period, their size ranges from 6.0 to 8.0 mm. 1,000 juvenile Akoya oysters are released into the sea and allowed to mature for 6 to 7 months. The grown oysters are removed, grafted with necleus (nucleus material derived from oyster DNA), and returned to Japanese shores to grow.

Oysters cared for at various times each year may die from complications (disease) or may require specialized care with various antibiotic treatments. In exceptional cases, more than $50 can be spent to save an oyster.
Finally, at the end of the second year, the oysters collected are checked inside with an x-ray machine and the first stage of classification is carried out according to their quality.

As a result of this classification, only 0.5% of the pearls are shiny, smooth and perfectly round.
Due to the difficulties in cultivation, perfectly round, smooth and lustrous pearls are rarer and more valuable than pearls that are not round in shape or have dull spots.
