Geology
Antigorite is part of the Serpentine group. Its olive-green color and smooth or scaly appearance are the basis of its name, which, according to Best (2003), derives from the Latin serpentinus, meaning snake rock. Its origins lie in the metamorphic alterations of peridotite and pyroxene. Serpentines may also pseudomorphically replace other magnesium silicates. Antigorite Cabochon Stone
Antigorite rock can be incomplete, causing the physical properties of serpentines to vary widely. Where it forms a significant portion of the land surface, the soils contain unusually high levels of clay. Antigorite is the most common serpentine polymorph formed during metamorphism of wet ultramafic rocks and is stable at temperatures exceeding 600 °C at depths of up to 60 km. In contrast, antigorite, lizardite, and chrysotile typically form near the Earth's surface and decompose at relatively low temperatures, probably well below 400 °C. It has been suggested that chrysotile is never stable relative to either of the other two serpentine polymorphs.
In the uppermost mantle of ocean basins, ultramafic rocks often contain abundant serpentine. Antigorite contains approximately 13% water by weight. Antigorite may play an important role in transporting water to the surface through subduction zones and subsequently releasing it to form magmas in island arcs. Antigorite Cabochon Stone. Some of the water may be transported to greater depths. Antigorite Cabochon Stone
Soils derived from serpentine are toxic to many plants due to high levels of nickel, chromium, and cobalt. Areas of serpentine-derived soil will appear as open, scattered small trees, often with conifers, in scrubby strips and otherwise forested areas. The flora is often very diverse, with specialized slow-growing species. These areas are called serpentine wastelands. Antigorite Cabochon Stone
