Shungite can be confused with other black stones or with cheaper stones sold as shungite . Genuine shungite must come from the Zazhoginsky mine in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Other types of shungite have much lower performance. They are much paler, sometimes gray. They contain little carbon (about 5%), almost no fillers, and very few minerals.
It is a relatively soft stone, and geologists have found that its origins date back approximately two billion years.
